Breathe before the craving

ree

How many times have we walked into the kitchen thinking we’re hungry, only to find ourselves scanning every shelf in the fridge or the pantry looking for something tempting to put in our mouth? And, how many times have we actually noticed that boredom, fatigue, or anxiety are the real emotional drivers convincing us that we somehow “deserve” a reward?

The truth is that this need to fill a void has little to do with hunger.

The relationship between what we eat and our emotional states is much deeper than we are usually willing to admit. And this is precisely where a powerful tool comes into play—one that invites us to pause, feel the body, and determine whether the need to eat is real or emotional.

That tool is conscious breathing.

When we become aware of our breath, something shifts. We relax, we stop acting on autopilot, and a small space opens up—one that transforms an unconscious impulse into a conscious action: Do I want to eat because I’m hungry, or am I in a state of anxiety or boredom that makes me seek relief through food? By tuning into our breathing rhythm, we begin to notice what we’re eating, how we’re eating it, and what emotional state we’re actually in.

Recognizing our automatic patterns allows us to relate to food in a more honest and balanced way. Before opening the fridge or giving in to a craving, stopping to breathe may be the difference between repeating an old habit or beginning a healthier way of caring for ourselves.

If this topic resonates with you, I invite you to explore the guided and consistent practices I’ve incorporated after studying with Dan Brulé, one of the world’s leading breathwork teachers. I came to understand that breathwork not only shifts how we eat or manage emotions—it transforms the way we live each day: with more presence, more mental clarity, and a deeper sense of wellbeing.

I would love to share these tools with you. Simple, short, powerful techniques that can help you regulate your energy, calm your mind, break automatic patterns, and rebuild a more conscious relationship with your body.

Every week, Zoe in Yourself subscribers receive access to breathing exercises, reflections, and resources that I don’t publish publicly. These materials are designed to support you on a path toward health, balance, and self-discovery.
